Libya
Libya’s army triumphed in Sirte on Saturday after its troops managed to capture the Ghardabiya air base from Islamic State.
According to Mohamed al-Gasri, a military spokesperson, the capture of the base located about 20 km from the centre, was strategically significant since it breaks supply routes for the militants.
This is their second victory in less than a week after the forces said on Wednesday, that they had taken control of a major power plant located 24 km west of Sirte.
Sirte has been under control of the extremist group since 2015, but prime minister Fayez- al -Sarraj remains confident that Libyan forces could unite to retake the city.
The victories speak volumes about the commitment of the new unity government to drive out the insurgents despite the prime minister dismissing the possibility of engaging international military forces to aid in the fight against terror.
According to reports, the minister said that Libya needs help from the international community but not bombardments but rather intelligence sharing and technical help.
He added that the war against terrorism will be able to unite the north African country.
